Located in the northern part of the country, high above sea level, Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city in the world. The cultural and business center of Mongolia and a hub connecting the Trans-Siberian Railway with the Chinese rail system, Ulaanbaatar has become a thriving urban center in one of the most remote locations in the world.

Ulaanbaatar Weather

The climate throughout most of Mongolia, including the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, is continental, which means that the summers are generally very short, with mild temperatures and frequent rainstorms, while winters are long and cold. Although it is possible to visit during any time of the year, certain months can get extremely cold, and most tourists choose to avoid them.

On average, the hottest months of the year are July and August, during which time the daily high temperatures will generally hover in the mid 70's. Temperatures will reach the lower 80's on occasion, but this is as hot as it gets. The nighttime temperatures during these months will generally drop to the upper 40's and lower 50's.

Much of the year is cold, and between October and April the temperatures will only reach the mid 40's on average. The nighttime temperatures will stay well below the negatives, and will average around -10-degrees between December and February.

Ulaanbaatar is not a wet place, and most of the year is very dry. The months from June through August do however see some rain, as this time is considered the rainy season.
